UNITED STATES (OBSERVATORY NEWS) — The United Nations welcomed US President Donald Trump’s announcement on Wednesday that the United States does not want to use military force against Iran.
Trump announced this position against the background of Tehran’s launch, at dawn on Wednesday, dozens of ballistic missiles at two military bases, including American forces, in its neighbor Iraq.
Commenting on Trump’s statement, Stephen Dougrick, a spokesman for the United Nations Secretary-General, told reporters at the headquarters of the international organization: “We welcome any indication, and any statement that takes us away from the confrontation.”
Regarding the position of the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, regarding the calls of Iranian officials to withdraw the American forces from Iraq, Dougric said only that “this is a bilateral issue between the two countries.”
Iran launched the attacks on Wednesday in response to the killing of the commander of the “Quds Force” of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards, Qassem Soleimani, in a US air raid in Iraq on Friday.
“We have not suffered any casualties, all of our soldiers are safe, and our two military bases have suffered only minor damage,” Trump said at a White House news conference.
He added that “the United States will immediately impose (new) economic sanctions on the Iranian regime … and those sanctions will remain in place until Iran changes its behavior.”
