US Defense Secretary vows to cooperate in investigation to isolate Trump

UNITED STATES (OBSERVATORY) — US Defense Secretary Mark Esper vowed on Sunday that the Pentagon would cooperate with a congressional probe to isolate President Donald Trump, in clear breach of the president’s policy of foiling the probe.

Esber said his ministry would try to comply with a call from House Democrats seeking records to withhold US military aid to Ukraine.

“We will do everything to cooperate with Congress,” Esber said in an interview on CBS.

Esper’s position comes a day after the White House said it would not cooperate with the Democratic-led House of Representatives.

Trump used Twitter to launch an attack on the investigation, citing a conspiracy theory by a “deep state” trying to topple him.

On Monday, Democrats sent subpoenas to the Pentagon’s budget office and the White House, demanding documents linked to Trump’s ban on military aid to Ukraine.

The heads of the three committees in the House of Representatives leading the investigation are seeking information about Trump’s pressure on his Ukrainian counterpart to harm Joe Biden, the most likely candidate to represent the Democratic Party in the presidential elections in 2020, but this is a condition for receiving military assistance.

Esper told Fox News Sunday that administration officials and Trump himself may not be allowed to see the documents requested by the subpoena.

“The White House has an opinion on the documents as well. There are a number of things that play a role in this,” he said.
