US deletes “Palestinian territories” from its list of countries and regions on its Web site

UNITED STATES, WASHINGTON (OBSERVATORY) — The US State Department decided to delete a special page in the Palestinian territories from the list of countries and regions , posted on its website.

This follows several political actions taken by U.S. President Donald Trump in favor of Israel since he came to power in 2017.

A copy of the archive from the website of former President Barack Obama (2009-2017) shows that the ” Palestinian Territories ” were on the list of countries and regions on the opening page and in the Near East Office section. Anyone can inquire or search for information about any country or region in the world (about 200 countries) on the State Department Web site.

A State Department official, quoted by Agence France-Presse, downplayed the importance of the change that occurred at the level of the ministry’s website, stressing that “is under modernization and there has been no change in our (US) policy.”

But the official, who did not reveal her identity, did not explain whether the site, which underwent a new design, would include a separate entrance to the Palestinian territories.

It should be noted that under President Obama (2009-2017) the US Department of State website included the term “Palestinian Territories” in the Near East Office section.

Palestinian anger

Saeb Erekat, chief negotiator and secretary of the Palestine Liberation Organization’s executive committee, said: “Delisting the Palestinian territories is not about the national interests of the United States, but about the progress of the Israeli settlers’ agenda.” Truth does not mean the abolition of its existence. ”

For its part, the Palestinian government expressed dissatisfaction with this decision and considered that “this step confirms the American bias towards Israel,” and said that this shift “can not ignore the Palestinian rights, which was recognized unanimously by the countries of the world.”

Encourage the Israeli government

That is why the former US ambassador to Israel, Dan Shapiro, under Obama, emerged from his silence, calling the change “madness.” He wrote in a tweet on Twitter: “The Palestinians will not go anywhere else. American interests require dealing with them and Israel itself continues to cooperate with the Palestinian Authority.”

It is not the first time that Donald Trump is biased and shows his full support for Israel. He even moved the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem and recognized the latter as the eternal capital of the Jewish state.

On the other hand, the US State Department changed some of the statements from its reports as it no longer speaks of “occupied territories”. Donald Trump has decided to reduce the financial assistance provided to the United Nations relief organizations operating in the Palestinian territories.

These include the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), as well as encouraging the Israeli government to issue several political decisions, such as preventing two Muslim female congressmen from visiting the Palestinian territories.
