US endorses Turkish offensive in northern Syria

UNITED STATES, WASHINGTON (OBSERVATORY) — The White House said Trump had validated Turkish intervention in northern Syria, adding that Ankara will take over all the Daesh terrorists captured in the last two years. As for the United States, they will not participate in the operation.

The US Armed Forces will not take part in the Turkish military operation that Ankara launches in northern Syria, informs the White House’s special declaration issued on the evening of September 6 following the telephone conversation between Donald Trump and Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

“Turkey will soon continue its planned operation in northern Syria,” the statement said. “US forces, after defeating the territorial” caliphate “of the Islamic State, will no longer be in the immediate vicinity.”

Turkey will be responsible for the Daesh terrorists captured in the area for the past two years, White House spokeswoman Stephanie Grisham said Sunday evening.

Turkish operation in northern Syria

On Saturday, October 5, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that “today or tomorrow,” Ankara could decide to launch a new military operation in the air as well as on land, on the east bank of the Euphrates.

According to the Turkish head of state, the purpose of this operation will be to clear the Syrian territory next to Turkey from the People’s Protection Units, to create a buffer zone and to settle Syrian refugees in Turkey.

A few hours after the announcement, Turkey began gathering additional equipment and military personnel at its border near the city of Akçakale, as reported by Turkish state television.
