UNITED STATES, WASHINGTON (OBSERVATORY) — Meeting in front of the US Consulate in Hong Kong, the protesters called on the United States to intervene militarily to “rescue” them. Beijing has evidence revealing the US contribution to the exacerbation of unrest triggered in June. The Beijing / Washington trade war does not seem to stop there.
Waved Stars and Stripes, American flag, a number of protesters in Hong Kong gathered in the morning of Sunday, September 8, in front of the US consulate, calling on US President Donald Trump to free the city under Chinese rule, the latest in a series of events that have gripped the territory for months.
Some signs raised by demonstrators showed Donald Trump equipped with weapons, came to conquer Hong Kong.
Indeed, during the 14 weeks of troops, the demonstrators are numerous to brandish the American and British flags.
The Chinese Foreign Ministry has published evidence that officials of the US consulate in Hong Kong were meeting and secretly coordinating with the leaders of the protest movement, including those of a separatist group.
US Defense Secretary Mark Esper on Saturday urged China to show restraint to the protesters in Hong Kong.
Broadly questioning the accusations of interference against him, Beijing claims that Hong Kong is an internal affair. He accused the United States and Britain of fomenting unrest, warning of damage to the economy and urging Washington to withdraw its black hand from Hong Kong.
Since 9 June, Hong Kong has been the scene of protests against the adoption of a draft law on the extradition of criminals to mainland China for trial by the ruling party’s courts. According to residents, the measure may erode the autonomy of Hong Kong.
Despite the suspension and then the total repeal of the bill, the protests, exacerbated by hard tests by Washington, have broadened to calls for more democracy.
The Financial Action Task Force (FATF) describes the repeal of the bill as a blow to the anti-money laundering system, warning that Hong Kong could become a place for money laundering.
After 156 years of British rule, Hong Kong was returned on 1 st June 1997 in China with a “one country, two systems” establishing the sovereignty of Beijing on Hong Kong, but also the maintenance of the autonomy of this old British colony.
