UNITED STATES (OBSERVATORY NEWS) — According to the US Air Force commander, Russia is testing the US in Syria, days after US troops prevented Russian forces from reaching an oil field in Syria, reports Anadolu Agency (AA).
Speaking to reporters at the Pentagon, the Major General of the Air Force and Deputy Commander for Operations and Intelligence for US Troops in Syria, Alex Grynkewich, said the US and Russia have “different commitments” on the ground and warned Russian forces not to take provocative actions.
His comments come after an incident last weekend, when US troops stopped a Russian military patrol on their way to an oil field near Rumaila town in Hasakah province.
Asked if Russian forces are testing the US side, Grynkewich said, “I think the Russians are always testing us.”
The blocking of Russian forces in Syria to reach the oil field ended without any shootings or violence between the two sides.
“Our message every time is to try to de-escalate the situation, not to take any provocative action and ask them to respect the protocols,” Grynkewich said.
Last year, the US sent additional forces to eastern Syria to prevent the oil fields from returning to the hands of the DEASH, Russia or Bashar al-Assad’s Syrian regime.
