US official: US forces will not defend Kurdish forces in Syria

UNITED STATES (OBSERVATORY) — The United States told the commander of the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) on Monday morning that US forces would not defend them against Turkish attacks anywhere, a US official told Reuters.

This came ahead of an expected Turkish attack in northeastern Syria.

US forces evacuated two observation posts in Tall Abyad and Ras al-Ain in northeastern Syria on the border with Turkey, the official said.

He said the rest of the US forces in the area were still in place.
