US Senate calls on Justice Department to investigate Democrats’ ties with Ukraine

UNITED STATES, WASHINGTON (OBSERVATORY) — Republican Senators Ron Johnson and Chuck Gressley sent Attorney General William Barr a letter urging them to investigate possible ties between the Democratic Party and Ukraine in the context of the 2016 presidential election, reports The Hill.

“The Justice Ministry has yet to inform Congress and the public about whether it has launched an investigation into relations and cooperation between the Ukrainian government and those associated with the election campaign (Democratic candidate – IF) Hillary Clinton or the National Committee of the Democratic Party … deserve such suspicions due and careful study, “the senators said in a letter.

At the same time, the senators pointed out their concern that, in their opinion, the foreign influence on the 2016 US presidential election was not properly studied.

The letter is dated September 27, but it was released only on Monday.

The Hill notes that the senators request came amid a scandal surrounding US President Donald Trump and Ukraine.

According to the American media, Trump tried on July 25 in a telephone conversation to persuade Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky to start an investigation against Hunter Biden, the son of former vice president Joe Biden.

A message about this was transmitted to his leadership by an American intelligence officer. It at the request of the congressmen was given to them for review. This message from an intelligence officer was the reason that on Wednesday, the Speaker of the US House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, announced the decision to begin a procedure whose purpose is to determine whether there are grounds for declaring impeachment to Trump.

At the request of the legislators, a transcript of Trump’s conversation with Zelensky was also given to them for study. However, as reported by the media, this did not force them to abandon the curtailment of the procedure.

The document published by the White House was compiled based on notes from U.S. administration officials who were in Trump’s office during a telephone conversation with Zelensky. According to the transcript, Trump did indeed request Zelensky to investigate Biden. However, there are no signs of threats or blackmail by the American president in the text.

Nevertheless, the media, commenting on the scandal, note that by demanding an investigation into the activities of the Biden in Ukraine, Trump is trying to eliminate the likely opponent from the Democratic Party – Joe Biden – in the 2020 presidential election.
