UNITED STATES, WASHINGTON (OBSERVATORY) — The US Senate voted on Wednesday to pass a bill to abolish President Donald Trump’s national state of emergency at the border, but failed to win the majority needed to bypass the president’s possible veto.
According to the network “NBC News” America, did not get the second chamber of Congress controlled by the Republicans to a two-thirds majority.
The Senate voted to end the state of emergency by 54 votes to 41 (out of 100), with 11 Republicans joining the Democrats in support of the resolution.
Democrats imposed the vote in part to put pressure on Republican senators who voted for Trump’s announcement earlier this year.
The Pentagon has set September military construction projects, of which $ 3.6 billion will be diverted to build border barriers.
On February 15, Trump declared a state of emergency in order to allocate funds to his proposed border wall, after failing to obtain the required funds from Congress or the Mexican government.
Lawmakers voted to end it once on March 14, but did not have enough majority to override the president’s veto power. By law, Congress could try to block the announcement every six months.
Trump has already announced that he will use the first veto during his presidency if a majority of senators approve the resolution challenging his initiative.
