UNITED STATES (OBSERVATORY) — Influential Republican Senator Lindsey Graham announced his readiness to submit a bipartisan bill on sanctions against Turkey and the suspension of its participation in NATO in the event of a military operation in Syria.
“I talked with Senator Chris Van Hollen about the situation in Syria. We will present a bipartisan bill on sanctions against Turkey if they invade Syria, and we will call for suspension of participation in NATO in the event of an attack on Kurdish forces that helped the United States destroy the Islamic State Caliphate,” Graham wrote on Twitter.
Earlier, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that a decision on a Turkish operation in northern Syria east of the Euphrates could be made in the coming days. He added that the purpose of the operation will be to clear the Syrian border with Turkey from the self-defense forces of the Syrian Kurds, create a security zone there and to accommodate the Syrian refugees in Turkey.
US President Donald Trump threatened to “destroy the Turkish economy” if Ankara, in his opinion, goes beyond what is permitted during the operation in the Arab Republic.
The presence of Turkish forces on the border of Syria, which are conducting an operation there against Kurdish forces, Damascus has repeatedly called illegal and urged Ankara to withdraw troops.
