US stocks close lower due to losses in bank stocks and tensions in Syria

UNITED STATES (OBSERVATORY) – US stocks fell on Friday as failed results by major banks spurred investor enthusiasm over possible widening of the conflict in Syria.

But the three major indexes on Wall Street ended the week with big gains.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.DJI> was down 122.91 points, or 0.50 percent, at 24,360.14. The Standard & Poor’s 500 Index <.SPX> was down 7.69 points, or 0.29 percent, to end unofficially at 2,656.30.

The Nasdaq Composite Index ended the session down 33.60 points, or 0.47 percent, at 7106.65.

Over the week, the Dow Jones gained 1.79 percent, the S & P 500 gained 1.99 percent and the Nasdaq gained 2.77 percent.
