UNITED STATES (OBSERVATORY NEWS) — Volkswagen never hid intentions to expand its R-line. At the same time, the Tuareg almost officially deprived of large and powerful engines. But the company found a way out of the situation, and as a result, almost the most powerful production Volkswagen of all time was born.
The already familiar 3.0-liter gasoline V6 with a output of 340 hp. for Touareg R combined with a 136-horsepower electric motor and a 14.1-kilowatt battery. In addition, an 8-speed automatic and all-wheel drive system capable of sending up to 70% of traction to the front axle and up to 80% to the rear were assigned as assistants to both engines. The total return of all this machinery is 462 hp. and 700 Nm.
Volkswagen did not name the dynamic characteristics of the SUV, limiting itself to data on the electronically limited maximum speed of 250 km / h. But a special emphasis was placed (for obvious reasons) on caring for the environment.
The most powerful Volkswagen starts exclusively on electric traction and moves on it as long as the battery allows it to charge or until the speed exceeds 140 km / h – only then the gasoline engine is connected. However, electronics will launch it even if it feels the need for sharp acceleration.
The gasoline engine was denied independent operation: the Touareg R can only function as a hybrid or as an electric car. The only freedom in dealing with ICE available to the driver is the management of his generating function.
The pilot of an SUV can set, for example, the maximum level of battery discharge or the maximum charge level, upon reaching which all the energy of the internal combustion engine will be spent on movement.
At the same time, the driver can immediately choose from nine predefined “presets” of driving electronics. Eco, Comfort, Normal, Sport and Individual are designed for asphalt, Offroad and Snow for off-road, and when installing the optional off-road package, more modes for gravel and sand are added.
In addition, two more exclusive assistants will be put optionally on the new Touareg – for driving with a trailer (Volkswagen called the new product the first hybrid in the world with this feature) and for a level 2 autopilot capable of driving at speeds up to 250 km / h.
And the basic package of the SUV included not only the appropriate body and interior decor with 20-inch wheels and expensive leather, not only smart LED optics, but also the Innovision Cockpit system with a 12-inch display instead of a dashboard and a 15-inch touchscreen multimedia system (with special hybrid data display modes).
Volkswagen Touareg R should appear in the European market in the second half of 2020. Whether they will sell a particularly powerful hybrid in our country is still unknown.
