What are the dangers behind magnetic storms? Explanations of a researcher

UNITED STATES, WASHINGTON (OBSERVATORY) — In addition to rising heart attacks, magnetic storms disrupt the operation of satellite equipment and power grids, Sputnik Igor Chachei of the Lebedev Institute of Physics said.

The magnetic storms can negatively impact the life and human activities on Earth and in space, told Radio Sputnik Igor Tchacheï of the Lebedev Physical Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

“It’s a set of consequences that can vary. These include satellite orbit changes, which must be recalculated, as well as disruptions in radio communications and navigation systems, “the researcher said.

Statistics also show an increase in heart attacks during magnetic storms as they influence capillary blood flow. However, they are safe for a healthy person, says Tchacheï.

Financial losses

According to the researcher, magnetic storms can lead to financial losses. He cites as an example the incident in March 1989, when Quebec was plunged into the dark after a surge related to a solar flare four times higher than normal.

The outage lasted nine hours, affecting six million people living in Quebec, as well as a portion of the northeastern United States, at a cost of two billion dollars.
