UNITED STATES (OBSERVATORY NEWS) — The Facebook-owned WhatsApp messenger is no longer the most downloaded application in the world. According to a study by Sensor Tower, in January 2020, TikTok became the leader – a social network built around short looped videos.
In total, in January 2020, TikTok downloaded 104.7 million times (this includes data on the App Store and Google Play, but not downloads in Chinese application stores). The most popular TikTok was in India – the country accounted for 34.4% of the total number of downloads – and in Brazil (10.4%).
Compared to the same period last year, the number of TikTok downloads worldwide increased by 46%, and compared to December 2019, the growth was 27%. The number of WhatsApp downloads in January 2020 amounted to 90.6 million – only 10% more than in January 2019.
The top five also included Facebook, Instagram and Facebook Messenger – that is, Mark Zuckerberg Corporation owns four of the five most downloaded non-gaming applications in the world.
