WHO: Europe is the “focus” of Covid-19

US, WASHINGTON (NEWS OBSERVATORY) — The World Health Organization confirmed on Friday that Europe has become the “focus” of the emerging coronavirus, and it is “impossible” to know when the virus reached its global peak.

“Europe is currently the epicenter of the global Covid 19 epidemic,” said WHO Director-General Tidros Adhanum Gebriissos, noting that the number of cases recorded daily exceeds the number of daily cases recorded in China during the peak of the disease.

As countries step up special measures to tackle the pandemic, the World Health Organization has recognized that it is still “impossible” to determine the stage at which the virus is peaking.

“We hope that this will happen sooner rather than later,” said Maria Van Kerkhoff, one of the WHO’s officials in dealing with the Covid-19 virus, but that “it depends on the reaction of countries when they record their first infection” and if “their approach is strict” or not.

The Director-General again called on the world to track the emerging coronavirus, saying, “We cannot fight a virus if we do not know its location. Discover, isolate, examine and treat every case of breaking Covid-19 transmission chains.”

He also demanded that the response measures set by states not be based on “social separation” but rather on a comprehensive approach based on examining all carriers of the virus and searching for those who mixed with them and put them in quarantine.

“Don’t let the fire spread.”

He noted that the measures taken by China, South Korea and Singapore include a “strict” monitoring of cases, thanks to investigations, tracking of contacts with the injured, social separation and population mobilization, which allowed to avoid infection and save lives.

The Director-General of the World Health Organization announced on Friday the establishment of a solidarity response fund to receive corporate contributions, which was done by Google and Facebook, for example, and charities, foundations and individuals.

At the beginning of February, the organization demanded that it be able to raise 675 million dollars to fight the virus until April.
