WHO sees coronavirus spread as pandemic

US, WASHINGTON (NEWS OBSERVATORY) — The spread of the new coronavirus in the world has become a pandemic, said World Health Organization Director General Tedros Adhan Gebreyesus at a briefing in Geneva.

“In the coming days and weeks, we expect the number of cases, deaths and the number of affected countries to increase … We have come to the conclusion that COVID19 can be described as a pandemic,” he said.

A pandemic is an unusually strong epidemic characterized by the spread of an infectious disease throughout the country, the territory of neighboring states, and sometimes many countries of the world.

As of March 11, the total number of new coronavirus infections in the world amounted to 118 thousand people in 114 countries of the world.
