WHO: two-thirds of the world’s population may become infected with a new coronavirus

UNITED STATES (OBSERVATORY NEWS) — With an unfavorable development of the situation, up to two thirds of the world’s population can become infected with the COVID-19 coronavirus.

This forecast was voiced by adviser to the World Health Organization Ira Longini.

According to Longini, who heads the Center for Infectious Disease Statistics at the University of Florida, quarantine can slow down the spread of the disease. But they were accepted after the virus penetrated into various parts of the PRC and went outside the country.

The model, built by Longini, is based on data according to which, under normal conditions, each infected person infects two or three more people. Even if this indicator is halved, a third of the inhabitants of the Earth will become infected with a new type of coronavirus.

On December 31, 2019, Chinese authorities reported an outbreak of unknown pneumonia in the city of Wuhan, located in Hubei Province. Scientists have identified the causative agent of the disease – the coronavirus COVID-19.

According to the latest data, only in China 1367 people became the victims of the disease, almost 6 thousand people recovered, and the number of confirmed cases of infection is close to 60 thousand.
