WHO worries about coronavirus incidence without clear epidemiology

UNITED STATES (OBSERVATORY NEWS) — Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO) Tedros Adhan Ghebreyesus said the organization is concerned about the number of cases of coronavirus “without a clear epidemiological link” that have been reported outside of China.

“Although the total number of COVID-19 cases outside of China remains relatively small, we are concerned about the number of cases of the disease that do not have a clear epidemiological connection, for example, people who have not traveled to China and had no contact with patients with confirmed cases,” Heads of WHO on Twitter.

In total, as Ghebreyesus said, at present, “1200 cases of the corona virus in 26 countries, eight people have died” have been recorded outside of China, and one case of the disease has been confirmed on the African continent. According to WHO estimates, more than 80% of patients with coronavirus have a mild illness and will recover.

The head of WHO emphasized that the greatest concern in the organization was still the possible spread of coronavirus in countries with poor health systems. To ensure that African countries are prepared for a possible epidemic on the continent, WHO has launched two special representatives on coronavirus. In addition, the organization published a special plan for preparedness and response to the spread of the disease, which called on the international community to send $ 675 million to support countries “especially the most vulnerable”.

On December 31, 2019, the Chinese authorities informed the World Health Organization about an outbreak of unknown pneumonia in the city of Wuhan in the central part of the country (Hubei Province). Experts have identified the causative agent of the disease – this is a new coronavirus. WHO recognized the outbreak as an emergency of international importance and gave the disease its official name – COVID-2019.

The number of confirmed cases of coronavirus infection in mainland China exceeded 76 thousand people, 2345 of them died, 20 thousand 659 people were cured and discharged from hospitals.
