Zarif: I am not convinced that we can avoid war

UNITED STATES, WASHINGTON (OBSERVATORY) — Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said he was not convinced the Islamic Republic could avoid a new war in the region.

“No, I am not convinced that we can avoid war, but I am convinced that we are not the one who will start the war. I am convinced that no matter who starts the war, it will not end it,” Zarif said in an interview with CBS on Saturday.

The Iranian foreign minister made clear that he meant that if war started, it would not be limited in scope.

Zarif said that the granting of the US administration visas for him and Iranian President Hassan Rouhani to attend the next session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York is not an indication of Washington’s desire to negotiate, pointing out that this decision results from the responsibilities of the United States as the host country of the headquarters of the world Organization.

Commenting on the US administration’s decision to deploy additional forces in Saudi Arabia in response to the recent attack on Aramco, Zarif said that “these ostentatious positions will not help (to ease the tension), and what will help is to end the Yemeni war,” expressing his conviction that “the United States Take a completely wrong approach to this issue.”
