UNITED STATES (OBSERVATORY) – Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shweigo said the Arctic has become the target of strategic regional and military interests and that its resources are receiving the attention of several countries, warning of conflict in the region.
The protection and effective development of Russian national interests in the Arctic region remain among the priority activities of the Russian military.
He pointed out that icebreakers currently operating in the northern region of the globe, not only to Russia, but to South Korea, Sweden, Germany, the United States and China.
He stressed that the Russian North Fleet, in order to respond appropriately to the threats, continues to implement the comprehensive plan of the Ministry of Defense to develop the capabilities of Russian forces in the Arctic until 2020.
He noted that last spring the fleet received icebreaker Elia Mormes and the Elbros supply ship, and in the summer it was supplied with the Admiral Gorshkov frigate and the large landing ship Ivan Green.
