UNITED STATES (OBSERVATORY) – US President Donald Trump said on Monday that an investigation by Special Prosecutor Robert Mueller over Russian intervention in the US presidential election in 2016 was illegal.
“I consider this an illegal investigation,” Trump said Thursday in an interview with Bloomberg, citing “unnamed senior specialists” who said “there should never be a special prosecutor.”
In the absence of legislation governing the appointment of special prosecutors, some legal experts questioned the appointment of Muller, but the US Justice Department, which made the appointment, confirmed that it was legal.
Muller is charged with determining whether Russia intervened in the 2016 campaign and whether there was complicity between Russian officials and President Trump’s campaign team.
Trump has repeatedly criticized the probe by Robert Mueller about the alleged Russian intervention in the 2016 US presidential election, and recently likened it to “ghost hunting.”
